Commemoration of Hrant Dink’s assasination
Hrant Dink, editor-in-chief of the bi-weekly Agos newspaper, was shot in the head on the 19th of January 2007 in front of his office. This act targeting the Turkish-Armenian journalist alleged the difficulty and danger for journalists to exercise their profession in Turkey.
On the occasion of the 9th anniversary of Hrant Dink’s assassination, huge gathering happened in Istanbul around his office, as people demand that the masterminds behind the murder are brought to justice.
Indeed, the prosecutor, Ogün Samast, was sentenced to 22 years of prison and one accomplice was delivered a shorter sentence for providing the weapon that killed the journalist. However, the investigation launched into the negligence of public officials at the time of Dink’s murder is still ongoing.
26 current and former police officers are stated as suspects of negligence concerning the protection of Hrant Dink, despite knowledge of an imminent attack against him.
An indictment presented on December 9, 2015 was accepted, though the possibility to investigate and even trial public officials for negligence in Hrant Dink’s murder remains an aim hard to reach.
