What will you do to put an end to the locucide of Lety ?
Open letter to the candidates to be elected Prime Minister of Czech Republic
by Benjamin Abtan, President of the European Grassroots Antiracist Movement – EGAM Miroslav Broz, Spokesperson of Konexe Jozef Miker, Roma activist
For more than forty years now, a “locucide”, a crime against the place, has been taking place in Lety.
Indeed, a pig farm has been operating on the site of the concentration camp there. This means a stain on the dignity of the dead and the living. This locucide resonates with the genocide against the Roma, the “Samudaripen”, and with the current persecutions which they face.
Lety has become an international symbol, thanks to the mobilization of civil society and political leaders for numerous years, and because of the lack of action by the Czech authorities.
Throughout Europe and beyond, Czech Republic is now known also because of the lack of respect for the victims of the Samudaripen, the survivors, their descendants and all the ones who fight for the respect of human dignity.
Our requests are as simple as dignity is : to remove the pig farm, to build a proper memorial, in order to replace the stele which was built on the mass graves, deepening the symbolic violence of the site, and to support researches on the history of the place.
The international mobilization for the dignity for Lety has been met by the Czech political leaders first by indifference and silence, then by interest. Some months ago, it has even been at the center of the public debate for several days.
A lot of pledges have been made. So far, no concrete action. The pig farm is still standing on the site of the concentration camp.
On Saturday 24th June, we will hold massive and dignified international commemorations in Lety. Hundreds of activists and political leaders, coming from more than 15 countries, will take part in them.
We will be very happy to then welcome you and to listen to you.
Our questions are very simple : will you come to pay homage to the victims ? What will you do to put an end to the locucide of Lety ?
Your involvement and your action are a matter of dignity. For Czech Republic, for your party, for you, for us, for the victims, for the living.
