From the 11th to the 21st of August 2016 EGAM in collaboration with YIHRBiH held a European Young Leaders Summer Training Seminar in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the last years, Europe has witnessed a substantial increase of racist and anti-Semitic behaviours that jeopardize the process of European integration and the defence of democratic values and Human Rights. The aftermath of the global economic crisis that began in 2008 has deepened this trend, making the most vulnerable groups of the society, like minorities -such as migrants, Muslims and Roma people-, the main target of hatred speeches whilst using them as a scape goat to achieve political support.
In order to face this situation through the strengthened of antiracist civil society organizations, the European Young Leaders Summer Training Seminar is launched every year. This ten days seminar is held twice per year –the first one in 2016 took place in Paris- and aiming to train young leaders from civil society organizations all over Europe. The goals of the training are several and connected to each other, providing basic understandings of the current context of Europe, mobilizing an European will, creating contacts, empowering young people with understanding and skills to carry out campaigns, and ensuring that young people remain engaged in the fight against racism, antisemitism, discrimination and genocide denial in the future.
The ten-day programme included an exchange of experience, animated discussions on current European topics, visits of Bosnia and Herzegovina regions, attending of the Sarajevo Film Festival, meetings with local NGOs, and the opportunity to create an action plan for changes with colleagues from all over Europe.
