Traditionally a right wing and extreme-right wing idea, the deprivation of nationality for dual nationals was endorsed by French President François Hollande and its Prime Minister Manuel Valls on the aftermath of the attacks perpetrated in Paris on the 13th of November, 2015.
Numerous voices have contested the utility of such a measure to protect French citizens from terrorists. Beyond the fact that terrorists aren’t all dual nationals nor particularly attached to their French nationality, this measure opens without restriction the cases that could lead to a deprivation of nationality.
Moreover, it contributes to widespread stigmatization of some part of the French population: not only the dual nationals, but all the French with an immigrant background, particularly the French Muslims. Instead of integrating these populations and fighting against discrimination, this proposition divides society, and thus is playing the game of terrorists.
