In Turkey, a delegation of 30 activists visited Istanbul in order to bring European solidarity to members of the Armenian community as well as Turkish civil society who strive for the recognition of the Armenian genocide. In light of recent developments in the Turkish political climate, this year it was crucial to meet with members of Turkish civil society, including journalists, lawyers and academics who face direct and daily repression from the Turkish state. The commemoration of the Armenian genocide falls within the frame of the EGAM led initiative “Remember April 24th 1915” which aims to better transmit the history and memory of the Armenian genocide, bring dignity to the victims and their descendants, advocate for its recognition in Turkey and elsewhere and support pro-democracy Turkish society. Today is Srebrenica Memorial Day. We honour the 8,372 men and boys murdered in the genocide 24 years ago, their Mothers and survivors.
Approximately 30,000 people will attend the collective funeral for 33 recently identified remains at the Srebrenica–Potočari Memorial Cemetery.
