Romas are India’s children: Sushma Swaraj
At the occasion of the inauguration of the three-day International Roma Conference and Cultural Festival 2016 organised by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and the Antar Rashtriya Sahayog Parishad (ARSP)-Bharat, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said that the people of the Roma community spread across various parts of the world are children of India.
Reminding that the Roma population represents about 20 million persons in over 30 countries she lauded the community pointing out that Romas are “perfect example of peaceful co-existence in multicultural societies”. Many scholars contributed through their research to document this impressive spreading over centuries that led Roma to be known under various names in Europe.
Beyond their ability to keep traits of the Indian ethos, as “perfect flag-bearers”, Sushma Swaraj also highlighted the ability of Roma people to contribute to the planning and building of European cities and societies, such as the city of London as craftsmen.
